Humidifiers are a great help in eliminating problems caused by dry air. Issues such as dry itchy skin, chronic coughs, and static more prominent during the colder months become almost non-existent with humidifiers.

This year, make a point to get your humidifier in tip top shape or if you don’t have one, invest in one or why not look into a centralized unit? Either model sure makes it easier to breathe.

Be sure to keep your humidifier clean and bacteria/mold free to avoid getting sick from un-maintained humidifier. Here are tips in keeping your humidifier bacteria and mold free:

Change the Water Daily: Mold and bacteria love stagnant water. Empty and thoroughly clean the water tank daily and refill it with fresh water.

Use Distilled or Demineralized Water: These waters have fewer minerals than tap water so they help reduce mineral dust from your humidifier to your indoor air.

Thoroughly Clean Your Humidifier Every Few Days: Clean the water reservoir with a mild cleanser and a soft-bristled brush. For the exterior, use a clean damp cloth. Make sure that all components are completely dry before using.

Use a Natural Cleaner:  Chemical cleaners can often leave odours and residues that may irritate symptoms of asthma sufferers. For a healthier alternative, use white vinegar to eliminate mineral build up and disinfect your unit.
